The Crossing Awarded Project Grant from The Pew Center for 'Aniara'

The Crossing have been awarded a $200,000 Project Grant from Philadelphia's Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. The grant will support the development of 'Aniara', a hybrid choral-theater work developed in collaboration with The Crossing and Finnish theater company Klockriketeatern, with music composed by Guggenheim and Pew Fellow Robert Maggio.

Amy Porter and Albany Symphony record "Trail of Tears" for all-Daugherty CD on NAXOS

Amy Porter is the featured flute soloist in Michael Daugherty’s Trail of Tears on an all-Daugherty CD recorded by the Albany Symphony Orchestra and scheduled for release in March 2018 on the NAXOS label. The dramatic flute concerto depicts the forced removal of Native Americans from their ancestral lands in the American southeast during the 1830s, and, in Daugherty’s words, provides “a musical journey into how the human spirit discovers ways to deal with upheaval, adversity, and adapting to a new environment.”

Elena Urioste debuts with Los Angeles Philharmonic at Hollywood Bowl in August 2017

Violinist Elena Urioste will make her solo debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic August 18-19, 2017, at the LA Phil’s summer venue, Hollywood Bowl. Elena is featured as soloist in the ravishing Entr’acte to Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty, op. 66, on a pair of all-Tchaikovsky concerts led by guest conductor Bramwell Tovey, music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Tovey’s “Tchaikovsky Spectacular” program, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, also includes selections from The Nutcracker and Eugene Onegin; Variations on a Rococo Theme (with cello soloist Thomas Mesa); and a perennial favorite, the 1812 Overture performed with fireworks

Tessa Lark to premiere "Love Letters," new work by Michael Thurber

On February 18, 2018, Tessa Lark will perform the world premiere of Love Letters , a new work for violin and orchestra by Michael Thurber, with Indiana’s Carmel Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Janna Hymes. Love Letters was written specifically for Tessa and incoporates elements of jazz, hip-hop, and rock as well as the fiddling tradition of her native Kentucky—a tradition that the violinist frequently showcases along with pieces from her large classical repertoire  in both recitals and concerto engagements. Two other works on the Carmel Symphony’s February concert will also feature Tessa: Mozart’s Adagio in E Major, K. 261, and Saint-Saens’s Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso .

Clarinetist Jose Branch-Ballester named assistant professor at the University of British Columbia

Canada’s University of British Columbia has appointed Jose Franch-Ballester Assistant Professor of Clarinet and Chamber Music, beginning with the 2017-18 academic year. He and his family will relocate to Vancouver from Spain during the summer of 2017. The appointment was announced by UBC on May 5, 2017. Click here  for the full press release.
